Club Board

The Cedars of Chapel Hill Club, Inc. and The Cedars of Chapel Hill Condominium Association are organized as non-profits under North Carolina law. The Club is responsible for providing all services that  are included in the Membership Agreement and for managing the financial and contractual obligations of the community. The Condominium Association was created to comply with North Carolina law regarding condominium ownership of our Cottages, Verandas and Villas and is responsible for maintenance, repair and replacement of the common property of the community.

Perry W. Aycock III

Senior living is Perry Aycock’s specialty and passion. As President of The Cedars, he brings a distinguished real estate career and multiple decades of advocacy for the senior demographic to his leadership role. A Chapel Hill resident since 2002, he serves on the Stewardship Committee of the University Presbyterian Church. Perry and his wife, Kara, have two college-aged children.

Frederick H. Black
Frederick H. Black

A former Associate Professor of Political Science at West Point, Frederick Black received his graduate training at the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Policy. Active in both the Chapel Hill and Carrboro communities, he has chaired and served on a number of local boards and committees, as well as serving on the advisory board of the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary.

Meg Peery McLaughlin

A graduate of UNC Chapel Hill and Union Presbyterian Seminary in Richmond, Meg Peery McLaughlin is an ordained Minister who has served a variety of congregations. Since August 2019, she and her husband Jarrett have served as Co-Pastors at University Presbyterian Church. As a member of the Club Board, Meg brings her spirit, passion and deep sense of call to serve.

Jennifer Player

Jennifer Player, president and CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Orange County, is a recognized leader in nonprofit management. Among her many accomplishments are one of the first senior Habitat communities in the country and the largest capital campaign in Orange Habitat’s history to fund Weavers Grove, an innovative, mixed-income neighborhood of unprecedented scale.

Linda M. Sanders

A certified executive coach, entrepreneur, mentor and trusted advisor to multiple startups, global teams and nonprofits, Linda brings extensive leadership experience to the Club Board. From cofounding a clinical stage pharmaceutical company to launching and sustaining business ventures, her contributions to The Cedars will be as far reaching as her many accomplishments.

Jerry VanSant

For more than 20 years, Jerry VanSant provided management and technical support to development programs throughout the world, making 80 international trips to more than 40 countries. Jerry is active in both paid and volunteer work, serving on several state and local non-profit boards. Along with serving on the Club Board, his current focus is on conservation awareness for the Triangle Community Foundation.

Tom Clegg

Vice President

A distinguished physicist who joined the UNC faculty in 1968, Tom Clegg has held leadership positions on multiple teams creating highly advanced instrumentation and systems for innovative research. In the early 2000s, he led a team of campus physical scientists during development and construction of the new Science Complex. He and his wife, Janet, moved to The Cedars in 2017.

Marcia Hanson

Marcia Hanson brings more than 30 years of professional and board experience to The Cedars Condo Board. An educator, academic dean, banking professional and insurance executive, she has served on boards ranging from The United Way and The Nature Conservancy to hospitals, universities and any number of HOA boards. To say that Marcia has a wealth of valuable experience is an understatement.

Linda Luftig
Linda Luftig

President

A Cedars resident since 2017, Linda Luftig brings to the Condominium Board a broad spectrum of professional and leadership experience. The former EVP of Public Affairs for HSBC Holdings for North America, she has also served on numerous nonprofit boards including Chairman of the Chelsea Art Theater in Chapel Hill.

John Schwab

From a one-year internship at the U.S Embassy in Pakistan to 42 years in commercial banking that have taken him around the globe, John Schwab brings to the Condo Board strengths too numerable to mention. Suffice it to say, however, that international experience and financial expertise are among them. Recently, John joined The Cedars finance committee, further underscoring his commitment to our community.

Ken Updegrave

Member at Large

A graduate of UNC and UNC Pharmacy School, Ken Updegrave joins the Condominium Board with an extensive background in pharmaceuticals and retail drug store management. As an Urban Ministries of Wake County volunteer, he has provided prescriptions to underserved populations. Ken is currently a PORCH volunteer and serves on The Cedars Health and Safety Committee.

Bill Whichard

Secretary

Bill Whichard has a distinguished career in law practice, public service and legal education. He has served in both the NC House and the NC Senate, as well as the NC Court of Appeals and as a justice of the Supreme Court of North Carolina. The former Dean and Professor of Law at Campbell University, he and his wife Leona have been Cedars residents since November 2017.
